After two-year break, it is truly an honour to present a sequel to the 'PL Funky' compilation. Originating as a free download distributed mostly in Poland, it was quickly picked up by Top Billin in 2010 and re-released. With tracks like The Phantom's 'Cambodia' or Zeppy Zep's 'Sierra' it has acquired a considerable cult following, gaining support from Ikonika, Bok Bok, Sinden or Brodinski.
The second release in the series is even closer to the original spirit, feels more natural, as this time, it is being released by a Polish label - Razzmatazz. PLF2 compiles what we think are the most promising Polish club artists evolving from dubstep and funky (hence the name). The release is divided into house-influenced 12" (including artists from PLF1) and more experimental digital exclusives delivered by newcomers.
The 12" opens with Zeppy Zep's 'Przester', a bass-driven 120 bpm anthem with bright metallic snares and soulful vocal samples. ''91', a teamwork of Teezy (of Supra1 fame) and Kixnare, truly a star among Polish hip hop producers, recalls innocent house jams of the early 90's. The flip-side starts with The Phantom's 'I'm Banging', an energetic blend of distinctive synths and ghetto vocals. Last but not least, Cracow's Vanatoski unveils his love for darker side of UK Funky circa 2008.
The digitals begin with Pvre Gold (1/2 of which is Naphta, a 2011 RBMA participant) and Space, Ladies, both marrying R&B influences with detailed synths and broken rhythm. Rhythm Baboon's effort is probably the most engaging and experimental in this compilation, while Umba's 'The Way You Move' wraps the whole thing with 80's electro boogie flavoured night jam.
